Our Mandate
“The Directorate of Immigration Services is established through the Executive Order No. 2 of November 2023 as an institution within the State Department for Immigration and Citizen Services in the Ministry of Interior and National Administration. The Directorate derives its mandate from Chapter 3 of the Constitution of Kenya 2010; Kenya Citizens and Foreign Nationals Management Service; Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act, 2011; Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Regulations, 2012; Relevant Laws and International Conventions, Government policies and directives, ministerial circulars, policy manuals, as well as administrative guidelines.”
The Mandate of the Directorate is;
- Control and regulation of entry and exit of all persons and removal of prohibited immigrants,
- Issuance of Kenya passports and other travel documents,
- Control and regulation of residency through issuance and renewal of work permits and passes; issuance of electronic travel authorization (eTA); granting of Kenya citizenship and permanent residence to qualifying foreigners; and registration of all non-citizens resident in Kenya,
- Provision of consular services at Kenya missions abroad,
- Formulation of national migration policy and review of Immigration laws and regulations, and
- Enforcement of the relevant acts.

Our Functions
The Directorate of Immigration Services is mandated to;
- Control and regulate entry and exit of all persons at our airports, seaports and land borders posts,
- Issue passports and other Travel Documents
- Control and regulate residency through issuance and renewal of work permits, residence permits and other passes,
- Consider and grant Kenyan citizenship to qualified foreigners,
- Issue electronic travel authorization (eTA)
- Register all non-citizens resident in Kenya,
- Declare and remove prohibited immigrants,
- Provide consular services to Kenya nationals and foreigners at all missions abroad,
- Offer quasi-consular functions to commonwealth countries not represented in Kenya,
- Investigate and prosecute persons who contravene the Immigration laws and regulations,
- Collaboration with other Ministries, Departments and Agencies regarding the Collection of Relevant Primary Data.
